Goliath Point Buy Guide for D&D 5e

Goliaths are the premier frontline race for STR-based martials. +2 STR and +1 CON combined with Stone's Endurance (reduce damage by 1d12+CON modifier as a reaction once per short rest) makes them extraordinarily durable. A Goliath Barbarian with Rage + Stone's Endurance can absorb damage that would floor other characters. Powerful Build (count as Large for carrying capacity and push/pull/drag) is a useful bonus for grapple-focused builds.

Goliath Lore & Background

Goliaths come from mountainous regions, living in nomadic tribes with a culture centered on proving one's worth through physical achievement. They track personal accomplishments and hold clan members to high standards of fairness and merit. In the Forgotten Realms they're associated with the Spine of the World and similar northern mountain ranges. Goliath adventurers often leave their tribes to prove themselves against the wider world — or to find challenges worthy of their strength.

Mechanical Traits

Goliath traits: +2 STR, +1 CON, Natural Athlete (proficiency in Athletics), Stone's Endurance (as a reaction when you take damage, roll 1d12 + CON modifier and reduce the damage by that amount; 1/short rest), Powerful Build (counts as Large for carrying, push, drag, lift), Mountain Born (acclimated to high altitude and cold climates). Stone's Endurance is the star — average of 1d12+CON+2 at level 1 is roughly 8-9 damage reduced per use.

Ability Score Bonuses

2014 PHB

+2 STR, +1 CON. Clean, focused, excellent for any STR+CON primary class. This ASI spread is specifically designed for melee frontliners and excels at that role.

2024 PHB

The 2024 PHB introduced updated Giant-type Goliaths with a significantly revised trait set including Large Form transformation. Check with your DM on which version is in play.

Best Class Pairings for Goliath

Barbarian point buy build

Stone's Endurance stacks with Barbarian's Rage damage resistance for incredible tankiness. +2 STR powers attacks, +1 CON adds HP and Unarmored Defense.

Fighter point buy build

+2 STR/+1 CON are Fighter's primary stats. Stone's Endurance gives Fighters a defensive resource that rivals Barbarian Rage.

Paladin point buy build

STR+2 covers weapon attacks; Stone's Endurance keeps the Paladin standing to deliver Smites in clutch moments.

Ranger point buy build

STR-based Ranger benefits from the ASI spread; Athletics proficiency from Natural Athlete enhances grapple ranger builds.

Monk point buy build

Unusual but powerful — a Goliath Monk grappler using STR instead of DEX can grapple Large creatures thanks to Powerful Build.

Common Build Mistakes

Not using Stone's Endurance reactively — new Goliath players often forget it and take full damage from an attack they could have reduced by 8-12 HP. Also: Powerful Build is excellent for grappling Large creatures, but players forget this option exists.

Frequently Asked Questions — Goliath

Is Goliath better than Half-Orc for Barbarian?
It's close. Half-Orc has Savage Attacks (more crit damage) and Relentless Endurance (free drop-to-1 once/LR). Goliath has Stone's Endurance (consistent damage reduction every short rest). Goliath is generally more durable across a full day of adventuring.
Can Stone's Endurance reduce damage to 0?
Yes, if the total rolled exceeds the incoming damage, the damage is reduced to 0 rather than healing you.
Does Powerful Build affect opportunity attacks?
No — Powerful Build only affects carrying capacity and push/pull/drag activities. It does let you grapple and shove creatures up to Large size.
Is Goliath legal in Adventurers League?
Yes, from Elemental Evil Player's Companion, which is AL-legal.
Can a Goliath use Stone's Endurance against spell damage?
Yes — it works against any damage, including spell damage like a Fireball.
