How Multiclassing Prerequisites Work

To multiclass into a class, your character must meet the minimum ability score requirement for that class at the time you take your first level in it. These requirements are in addition to your starting class prerequisites — you don't need to re-qualify for your original class, only for the new one.

If your stats meet all requirements, you can take a level in that class when you would normally gain a level. You gain all level 1 features of the new class, but not its starting equipment or starting proficiencies (except certain armor and weapon proficiencies).

Multiclassing and Point Buy Planning

When building a multiclass character with point buy, you need to allocate points to satisfy two sets of stat priorities. The key is finding multiclass combinations that share primary stats — like Paladin/Warlock (both use CHA) or Druid/Ranger (both use WIS).

Planning your point buy for multiclassing: set your primary class stats first (usually 15+), then verify you have or can reach 13 in secondary class required stats. Sometimes a single +1 racial bonus is enough to hit the 13 threshold without additional point buy investment.
