Where a Barbarian Spends 27 Points
Strength and Constitution both have to be funded before anything else, because Rage adds flat damage rather than accuracy and Unarmored Defense reads Constitution directly into Armour Class. That pairing is what makes 15/14 the opening move and leaves 13 points for everything else.
The Barbarian array, point by point
| Ability | Score | Point cost |
|---|---|---|
| STR | 15 | 9 |
| DEX | 13 | 5 |
| CON | 14 | 7 |
| INT | 8 | 0 |
| WIS | 12 | 4 |
| CHA | 10 | 2 |
| Total spent | 27 | |
That spread reaches Armour Class 16 and 14 hit points at level 1 on a d12 hit die.
Where Dexterity stops paying for Armour Class
Unarmored Defense reads 10 + Dexterity + Constitution, so both modifiers land in Armour Class and a shield still stacks on top of them. Dexterity 13 and Constitution 14 reach AC 16 with a shield, which is what a Fighter in plate gets for nine points more.
| DEX | Unarmored Defense (CON) | Studded leather | Half plate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 11 | 11 | 14 |
| 10 | 12 | 12 | 15 |
| 12 | 13 | 13 | 16 |
| 13 ← | 13 | 13 | 16 |
| 14 | 14 | 14 | 17 |
| 15 | 14 | 14 | 17 |
- Unarmored Defense (CON). 10 + DEX modifier + CON modifier
- Studded leather. 12 + DEX modifier, uncapped
- Half plate. 15 + DEX modifier, capped at +2
Breakpoints and multiclass thresholds
Rage adds flat damage rather than accuracy, so Strength 15 is bought for the attack roll and the multiclass door behind it, not for the damage bonus Rage already supplies. These are the scores where a Barbarian point changes an outcome instead of a number.
- Constitution 14
- Two more hit points every level on a d12, and the second half of Unarmored Defense.
- Dexterity 14
- With CON 14 this is AC 14 unarmoured; below it a shield is doing the work instead.
- Strength 13
- The multiclass line into Fighter and Ranger, which is where most Barbarian dips go.
Multiclassing checks the score itself, not the modifier, so Strength 13 either exists on the sheet at character creation or the door is closed until an Ability Score Improvement at level 4.
Scores this array leaves behind
- Intelligence at 8
- No Barbarian feature reads Intelligence, and Danger Sense already covers the Dexterity saves that traps and fireballs call for.
Subclasses that change the array
- Path of the Totem Warrior (Bear) — STR 15 · DEX 13 · CON 15 · INT 8 · WIS 12 · CHA 8
- Bear resistance multiplies every hit point, so CON 15 earns more than the Charisma it costs.
- Path of the Zealot — STR 15 · DEX 12 · CON 14 · INT 8 · WIS 13 · CHA 10
- Divine Fury damage is flat, so the spare points move to Wisdom 13 and the saves that end a rage early.
- Path of the Storm Herald — STR 14 · DEX 13 · CON 15 · INT 8 · WIS 12 · CHA 10
- Storm Aura sets its save DC from Constitution, so CON 15 raises the DC that Strength 15 would not.
Races that fit this spread
| Race | STR | DEX | CON | INT | WIS | CHA |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dwarf (Mountain) | 17 | 13 | 16 | 8 | 12 | 10 |
| Half-Orc | 17 | 13 | 15 | 8 | 12 | 10 |
| Bugbear | 17 | 14 | 14 | 8 | 12 | 10 |
- Dwarf (Mountain). The only +2/+2 in the game, and both halves land on the two scores Unarmored Defense reads.
- Half-Orc. Relentless Endurance is a second life on a class that stands in the front rank all fight.
- Bugbear. Reach plus Surprise Attack front-loads damage in the round before Rage economy matters.
The mistake this array is built to avoid
Buying Strength 15 and Dexterity 15 for Unarmored Defense. Those two scores alone cost 18 of the 27 and leave Constitution at 12, which is the one number Rage cannot compensate for.
Reckless Attack hands out advantage against you on purpose, so the AC 16 above is a number the Barbarian spends rather than one it hides behind. That is why Constitution 14 and the d12 matter more here than the Armour Class does.
Barbarian ability score questions
What is the best starting array for a Barbarian?
Strength 15, Constitution 14, Dexterity 13 spends all 27 points. That combination sets Unarmored Defense at AC 13 before any shield, gives +2 hit points a level on the d12, and keeps Wisdom at 12 for the Perception checks a scout-less party will ask for.
Should a Barbarian buy Dexterity or Constitution first?
Constitution, every time. Both add the same +1 to Unarmored Defense at 14, but Constitution also adds a hit point per level on a d12 and backs a save proficiency the class already has. Dexterity 14 only pays once the Constitution is already at 14.
Is Strength 15 or Strength 14 better on a point buy Barbarian?
Strength 15 costs 9 points against 7 for a 14, and the extra two points buy nothing until a racial bonus lands on top. With Mountain Dwarf or Half-Orc the 15 becomes 17 and the modifier reaches +3, which is where the 9 points finally earn out.
Can a Barbarian dump Intelligence to 8 safely?
Yes. No Barbarian feature reads Intelligence, and Danger Sense already grants advantage on the Dexterity saves that traps and area spells use. Dropping Intelligence to 8 frees the 2 points that take Wisdom from 10 to 12.

- Paladin — A common one-level dip target, and the same Strength 13 multiclass line applies.
