Terms of use
Using the site means accepting what is set out here. It is short, and most of it exists to be precise about two things: who owns the game this tool calculates for, and what you can rely on a free calculator to be right about.
Using the site
You may use this site for anything you like, including at a commercial table or in material you sell, with three limits that are about keeping the site working rather than about controlling you.
- Do not attempt to interfere with the site or the hosting it runs on, or use it to attack anyone else.
- Do not present the site, or output taken from it, as something published or endorsed by Wizards of the Coast, Paizo, or any other rights holder.
- Do not republish the site’s written explanations wholesale as your own. Using the numbers it works out is entirely fine; the arithmetic of a published game is not anyone’s to own.
Trademarks and affiliation
Dungeons & Dragons, D&D, Player’s Handbook, their respective logos, and all other Wizards of the Coast product names are trademarks of Wizards of the Coast LLC in the United States and other countries. Pathfinder is a trademark of Paizo Inc. This site is an independent tool, is not published, endorsed, sponsored or approved by either company, and has no affiliation with them. No claim is made to any of those marks; they are used only to say accurately which game a calculation applies to.
The licence the rules content relies on
The rules content this site relies on — ability scores, modifiers, the purchase table, class and species mechanics — is referenced under the System Reference Document 5.1 and 5.2, which Wizards of the Coast has made available under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence. Where a figure is cited to a page in a Player’s Handbook, that citation identifies the source of a fact; it is not a reproduction of the text on that page.

The methodology page lists every source 5e Point Buy Calculator cites, and marks which are printed rules, which are community conventions, and which this site derived itself.
This site's own work
The explanations, the class analysis, the code and the design of this site are its own work and remain the author’s, and the source citations on the methodology page make clear which parts are describing someone else’s rules. Quote a sentence or two with a link and that is fair; copy a page and it is not.
Accuracy, and what to do when we disagree
Every figure here is derived from the rules by tested code, and the methodology page shows the source for each one. Even so, editions differ, errata are issued, and printed books are sometimes ambiguous. Where this site and your book disagree, your book and your DM win. If you find such a disagreement, reporting it is genuinely useful — corrections are logged in the changelog with a date.
No warranty
The site is provided as it is, free of charge, with no warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranty of fitness for a particular purpose. It may be unavailable, change, or be withdrawn at any time without notice. To the fullest extent the law allows, the author is not liable for any loss arising from use of the site — which in practice means that if a number here is wrong and it costs you a character, that is between you and your DM.
Cookies and tracking
Google Analytics runs on this site and sets cookies to count visits; it is the only third-party service here, and nothing you enter into the calculator is sent to it or to anyone else. Because the details belong in one place rather than two, what it collects and how to block it are set out in full on the privacy page rather than repeated here.
Copyright complaints
If you believe material on this site infringes your copyright, send a notice through the contact page and it will be acted on promptly. Please include everything below, because a notice missing any of it cannot be acted on.
- Identification of the copyrighted work you say has been infringed.
- The exact URL on this site, and enough detail to locate the material on that page.
- Your name, address and a means of contacting you.
- A statement that you believe in good faith that the use is not authorised by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
- A statement that the information in your notice is accurate, and that you are the copyright owner or authorised to act on the owner’s behalf.
- Your physical or electronic signature.
Changes to these terms
These terms may be revised. A revision is a change to the site like any other, so it is dated in the changelog, and the date this page was last modified is shown at the foot of it.
